Geriatrics Specialist Clinic
Geriatrics is a branch of medicine which concentrates on elderly people’s health. The main aim of this specialization is to keep older people fit so that they can enjoy life despite their older age. This, however, needs acknowledging certain changes occurring in the ageing body in comparison with the younger body, both in a physical and mental sense. It is crucial to remember that older people suffer from many diseases at the same time, which changes their body’s response to disease processes. The greatest problem in patients at this age is that they have to take a large number of medicines prescribed by numerous specialists.
Geriatricians during consultations do a comprehensive medical examination of the physical and mental health and of functional capacities of an older patient. They also make a thorough analysis of the medicines taken by the patient. They carry out tests which reveal typical geriatric problems, for example imbalance, impaired mental functions, depression, malnutrition, etc. Sometimes they recommend doing laboratory tests and imaging, or refer the patient to a psychologist, a pharmacist, a dietician or a physiotherapist. Based on the collected medical data, geriatricians make recommendations in line with the older patient’s priorities, which include treatment and prophylaxis to help the patient remain fully physically fit and independent.
