Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin (BOTOX, Azzalure)

Botulinum toxin paralyses facial muscles by blocking acetylcholine secretion. As a result, wrinkles which are formed by too intensive work of some muscles are smoothed out. When a muscle no longer receives neural stimuli, it stops contracting and stretches. As a result, the skin straightens out.

Indications and contraindications

  Indications
  • forehead lines (lion’s wrinkle)
  • horizontal forehead lines
  • lines around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • lines under the eyes
  • excessive sweating of the armpits, palms and feet
  • gummy smile
  • bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • lip flip, a non-surgical lip lift
  Contraindications
  • impaired neuromuscular transmission (myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome)
  • local skin infection
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the product
  • problems with blood clotting
  • If you are taking a drug from the aminoglycoside or aminoquinoline group, or cyclosporine, D-penicillamine or tubocurarine, among other medicines, you should wait approximately 2 weeks after the last dose before starting botulinum therapy. Those drugs may interact with botulinum toxin and intensify or reduce its action.

Botulinum toxin treatment

Bruxism (teeth grinding)

In the case of bruxism, that is teeth grinding associated with temporomandibular pain, 3-4 cheek injections are administered on each side and the problem disappears for a few months. Then, it is recommended that the procedure be repeated every 6 months for 2-3 years. The procedure causes the masseter muscle mass to be reduced, with an additional facial slimming effect in individuals with an overgrown masseter.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Botulinum toxin blocks sweat glands and is used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). A procedure is performed on the armpits after a cream anaesthetic is applied. There are slightly more injections than for a facial procedure. The procedure is very effective and eliminates unpleasant excessive sweating for about 6-12 months.

Before the procedure

Every procedure using botulinum toxin is preceded by taking a detailed medical history from the patient in order to ensure maximum safety and exclude any contraindications.

The procedure

Before the procedure, the doctor makes detailed observations of muscle movement and establishes the sites for botulinum injections. Botulinum dose is selected based on individual patient needs. Botulinum is administered via injections with a microneedle under the skin, into the muscle. Botulinum procedures are painless and almost complication-free.

After the procedure

The effect of botulinum injections appears between day 2 and 14 after the procedure. Muscle paralysis is temporary and reversible. The therapeutic effect lasts from 3 to 6 months (up to 12 months for hyperhidrosis treatment). After that time, the procedure needs to be repeated.

Doctor’s instructions

You need to make sure that you:

  • do not bend over or lie down for 4 hours after the procedure
  • avoid lifting weights and intensive physical exertion on the day of the procedure
  • do not drink alcohol on the day of the procedure
  • do not massage the injection sites for 4-5 days
  • do not warm up the injection sites for about 2 weeks
  • do not use sauna and tanning beds for 2 weeks after the procedure
