Hygiene and prophylaxis centre

Prophylaxis centre

When providing dental care to our Patients, we focus not only on treatment, but also on prevention of oral and dental disorders. Prophylaxis and hygiene procedures influence the durability of the treatment and guarantee that the Patient has beautiful and healthy smile for years!

Appropriate oral hygiene constitutes the foundation of oral health. Conservative, periodontal, orthodontic, and prosthodontic treatment is much more effective if oral hygiene is appropriate. Systematic oral hygiene procedures (including scaling and air polishing) performed in the dental office constitute only 50% of success. In order for the treatment to be effective, the Patient must also perform oral hygiene procedures carefully and systematically at home.

At St. Wojciech’s Hospital Dental Centre, the Prophylaxis Office is organised by two trained dental hygienists: Beata Jandy and Marta Malicka who perform their duties carefully and with great commitment. Apart from a wide variety of prophylaxis procedures, you will find support and help at choosing appropriate toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthrinses, as well as home oral hygiene regimen.

Professional oral prophylaxis is extremely important in the treatment process. If performed appropriately, oral hygiene procedures make it possible to achieve perfect results which manifest themselves as a healthy and beautiful smile.

Prophylaxis care

Scaling

Procedure that involved the removal of mineralised dental deposits that form due to plaque mineralisation. The deposits are usually called dental calculus or tartar. Calculus remains on teeth, in particular in subgingival areas, is a reservoir of dangerous bacteria and leads to inflammation within the gums and periodontium. It leads to atrophy of periodontium, and roots of the teeth become exposed to the oral environment (periodontal disease). Scaling is performed using ultrasonic scales. The ultrasonic scaler generates vibrations at several thousand Hertz. These vibrations are transmitted to a special blade, which causes the calculus to break and fall off the tooth.

Air polishing

One of the basic cosmetic and prophylactic procedures. It involves the removal of all deposits that form due to accumulation of colour substances from coffee, tobacco, or fizzy drinks, on tooth surfaces. It is performed using a special device that directs the mixture of air polishing powder onto the teeth. A special powder with fine-sized grain (sodium carbonate) is used for the purpose. This procedure is completely safe (it does not destroy enamel). The powder is mixed with water and sprayed under pressure. The procedure ends with tooth polishing. This is an addition to scaling and is frequently performed directly afterwards. It is completely painless. Air polishing, apart from its cosmetic importance, is also of prophylactic importance – it protects from caries development.

Foam fluoridation

After professional tooth cleaning, we offer fluoridation that can be performed using special, variously flavoured foam. It is an element of prophylaxis, as it strengthens enamel and increases its resistance to caries.

Fissure sealing

Fissure sealing is a totally painless prophylactic procedure. The aim of this procedure is to fill fissures and pits on occlusal tooth surfaces using special light-cured resin (fissure sealant) The sealant fills the fissures and pits on the occlusal surface and makes it impossible for food and bacteria to stay on the tooth and, therefore, protects the tooth from caries.

Silver nitrate application

This technique is used for deciduous teeth whose crowns have already been destroyed severely by caries and in which it is impossible to place a restoration. The procedure is painless and involves the application of a solution from which bactericidal silver precipitates. This inhibits caries, which prevents the Patient from premature extractions of deciduous teeth.

Fluoride varnish application

Fluoride varnish application is another specialist means of fluoridation. It can be performed in children, adolescents, and adults. The varnish dries on the teeth, which results in the fluoride being available to enamel for several hours at high concentrations. Fluoride varnish used in adults is completely colourless and is invisible after the procedure. The varnish used in children looks like honey, which makes it easier to control the amounts of the varnish placed.

Infiltration of caries (ICON)

Treating carious teeth is invariably associated with drilling. However, there is one material that makes it possible to fight incipient caries without the use of dental burs.
Incipient caries is easy to diagnose in teeth, as it shows as white or yellowish spots. When removing them by drilling, healthy tooth structure is also partially removed. This is unnecessary. The use of ICON protects both healthy tissues and tissues affected by incipient caries. Treatment with ICON is also referred to as infiltration.
The use of ICON makes it possible to protect dental hard tissues that would be damaged during conventional preparation. Before ICON is applied, a special gel is applied to the tooth, the surface of the tooth is dried with alcohol, and at the end – ICON is applied. The resin penetrates dental tissues and hardens, and that is why it protects the areas in which demineralization due to bacterial acids has already occurred. Affected teeth can be treated within one appointment in a painless way without damage to healthy tissues, and the method can be used in both primary and permanent teeth.
