A genetic mutation which is associated with a very large risk of breast cancer (40% to 70%) may be an indication for prophylactic skin-sparing breast removal with subsequent implant reconstruction. After detailed examination and individual evaluation of the risk of breast cancer, a patient may be found eligible for skin-sparing removal of the glandular tissue in both breasts. In this case only the glandular tissue is removed while the skin, nipple and areola are left intact. The space after the removed tissue is filled with a safe implant.
