Conjunctival lesions

Conjunctival lesions

The conjunctiva is a thin layer of mucosa lining the eyes and the internal side of the eyelids.

Various pathological changes can occur in the conjunctiva. These include degenerative lesions such as pinguecula or phlyctenula or neoplastic ones such as pigmented moles.

In certain cases, conjunctival lesions must be removed for medical or cosmetic reasons.

The procedure

At the St. Adalbert’s Hospital, conjunctival procedures are performed using the dry no touch technique that enables lesions to be removed within a healthy tissue margin, and using cryotherapy, if necessary.

Histopathological examination of the excised material is performed.

The procedures are characterised by various degrees of invasiveness depending on the type of lesion. For the majority of lesions, absorbable sutures are used, which do not need to be removed. However, they do cause temporary discomfort that usually lasts approximately 7-10 days.
