Surgery for hydrocele testis

Your eligibility for the procedure will be evaluated by a specialist in urology on the basis of your medical history and imaging tests (ultrasound).

• Two weeks before the procedure you should have the following blood tests done: full blood count, electrolyte test, coagulation test, blood type, glucose, creatinine, Hbs antigen, ANTI-HCV.
• Consultation with an anaesthetist.
• Urinalysis and urine culture.
• Anticoagulant medications should be discontinued 2 to 7 days before the procedure, depending on individual medications.
• Shaving the surgery site (scrotum).

• This is an open surgery, where a small incision is made in the skin on the scrotum, the fluid is drained and excess membranes which produce the fluid are removed.

• A drain may be left in the wound for one day.

• If the drain was left in the wound, it is removed one day after the procedure.
• A course of antibiotics is prescribed for 3 to 5 days.
• Scrotum should be kept high (tight underwear).
• Physical exertion should be avoided for 2 weeks.
• A follow-up ultrasound scan takes place after 2 to 3 weeks.
